IoTServa Request a Pilot
Roadmap

Related Protocols and What Is Next

IoTServa reads eight protocols today. These nine are the ones you will meet beside them, with an honest note on how each can be reached now.

Industrial communication hardware laid out in a grid: an industrial PC, a managed switch, a heat meter, a small sensor and a CAN connector

Not Read Natively, Yet

OPC UA

IEC 62541. A platform-independent industrial standard with a rich information model, common on newer PLCs, SCADA and machine controllers.

Today: Many OPC UA servers also expose Modbus TCP or can publish to MQTT. Read those today; native OPC UA is on the roadmap.

SNMP

The management protocol for network equipment, UPS units and some PDUs, reading values by object identifier (OID).

Today: UPS and PDU vendors often offer Modbus or MQTT cards. Native SNMP is on the roadmap.

M-Bus (Meter-Bus)

EN 13757. A two-wire bus for heat, water and gas meters, powered from the bus, polarity-insensitive, typically at 300 to 9600 bit/s. It is not RS-485.

Today: M-Bus to Modbus gateways are common and can be read today through the Modbus driver.

CAN Bus

ISO 11898. A multi-master, message-arbitrated twisted pair found in vehicles, gensets and some machinery, terminated at 120 ohm at each end. Not request and response like Modbus.

Today: Genset and engine controllers usually expose Modbus as well. Read that today.

Zigbee

A 2.4 GHz mesh radio used by many smart building and home sensors, coordinated by a hub.

Today: Zigbee hubs that publish to MQTT can be read today through the MQTT driver.

Matter and Thread

The smart home standard from the Connectivity Standards Alliance, running over Wi-Fi, Ethernet and Thread (an IPv6 mesh).

Today: Aimed at consumer devices. Not on the current roadmap for commercial sites.

Sparkplug B

An MQTT payload and topic specification from the Eclipse Foundation that adds birth and death certificates and typed metrics to plain MQTT.

Today: Plain MQTT is read today. Sparkplug B decoding is on the roadmap.

PROFINET and PROFIBUS

Industrial fieldbuses from PROFIBUS and PROFINET International: PROFIBUS DP over RS-485 at up to 12 Mbit/s, PROFINET over industrial Ethernet.

Today: Machine data normally reaches us through the PLC over Modbus TCP or OPC UA rather than from the fieldbus itself.

LonWorks

An older building automation network (ISO/IEC 14908) still present in some estates.

Today: LonWorks to BACnet gateways exist and can be read today through the BACnet driver.

Roadmap items are intentions, not dates or commitments. Nothing on this page is a promise of delivery.

Roadmap Questions

Why list protocols you do not support?

So you can plan. Most sites with these protocols can still be read today through a gateway or a controller that exposes Modbus, BACnet or MQTT, and this page says how.
