BLE vs LoRa for Sensors: Range, Power and Use Cases

BLE and LoRa both suit battery sensors but at different ranges. Compare them and choose by distance, data and infrastructure.

Choose BLE for rooms and short distances, LoRa for sites and long distances. Many projects use both.

Range

BLE covers metres to tens of metres, depending on walls and metal. LoRa covers kilometres in open terrain and less indoors. That difference decides most choices.

Data and power

LoRa sends very small messages infrequently, which allows years of battery life. BLE can move more data and connect to phones, but a device that advertises often uses more power than a LoRa sensor that reports every few minutes.

Infrastructure

BLE needs gateways in or near each room. LoRa needs fewer gateways that cover a larger area. A cold room or a warehouse often suits BLE, while an estate or a campus suits LoRa.

Typical uses

BLE suits asset tags, room-level presence and nearby sensors. LoRa suits remote temperature, water level, soil moisture and door sensors across a site.

Using both

A warehouse might track tagged assets with BLE and monitor cold rooms and tanks with LoRa. IoTServa applies the same tag model to both, so one dashboard and one alert path serve them.
